Down and down/feather bed pillows: how often should you clean them?
By: Stu Bloom
Questions to ask yourself
How often should you clean your down and down/feather pillows?
Some “experts” suggest that you should clean your pillows twice a year; others suggest once a year; yet others suggest once every five years.
The correct answer, of course, is neither of these guesses. And, yes, they’re guesses.
Our approach is a little different.
We recommend that you should consider cleaning and refurbishing your down and down/feather pillows whenever you believe that the time is right.
Here are some questions to ask to aid in that decision:
- Is the outer pillow shell stained?
- Has the outer pillow shell yellowed?
- Does the pillow have an odor?
- Is your pillow flat and/or lumpy?
- Does the down or down/feather fill require adjustment (the addition or removal of down) to provide better support and/or comfort?
If the answer to any of these questions is “yes”, then it’s time to consider cleaning, sanitizing, deodorizing and renovating your down and down/feather pillows.
Refurbish at least every 2 years
And even if the answers to all these questions is “no”, we’ll go out on a limb here and suggest that you should have your pillows cleaned and refurbished at least once every two years.
Why once every two years?
Because two years is, in our opinion, the tipping point – the point at which continued use without refurbishment starts to reduce the resiliency, durability, longevity and overall comfort of your pillow.
Whatever the appropriate time frame, the key is to establish a maintenance routine to ensure that your pillows are refurbished every x number of years. In much the same way you change the oil in your vehicle every 3000 miles.
That’s one of the reasons we include the date on which a pillow was last refurbished on every pillow tag attached to every WHITE KNIGHT pillowCARE refurbished pillow.
Studies too numerous to mention have all come to the same conclusion: A good night’s sleep is integral to how you’ll feel and perform the next day.
And a clean, comfortable, supportive pillow is critical to a good night’s sleep.
